  1. Thank you for downloading this information file concerning U'NI-net,
  2. the network for users. The purpose of this document is to let you know
  3. a little more about what many think is the best managed and
  4. friendliest EchoMail network.

  7.                         ■  WHAT IS U'NI-net?  ■
  8.

  10.         U'NI (Pronounced YOU AND I) network was formed by a small
  11.         group of volunteer sysops to provide EchoMail service suitable
  12.         for users of all ages. The network continues to be operated
  13.         and administered by volunteers dedicated to serving the users
  14.         of U'NI-net.

  17. PURPOSE:
  18. -------

  20.         The goal of U'NI is a simple one: to promote the exchange of
  21.         information.  As a distributor of electronic mail, we focus
  22.         our efforts on the users, eliminating nearly all of the
  23.         political infrastructure which can be found in any other
  24.         EchoMail network. This focusing allows quality, current
  25.         information to be distributed quickly to everyone.

  28. ACTIONS:
  29. -------

  31.         To get the latest quality information requires the right
  32.         connections and we certainly have them.  Many of our hardware
  33.         and software related conferences are hosted by the author, or
  34.         a representative of the vendor.
  35.  
  36.         Many of our users are working professionals in the computer
  37.         industry that offer experiences, advice, and tips that cannot
  38.         be found anywhere for any price.

  41. USERS AND SYSOPS:
  42. ----------------

  44.         Diversity ! That's how we achieve our goal. We want to find
  45.         users with knowledge of subjects from Alchemy to Zymurgy
  46.         who are willing to share it. The network exists for users
  47.         to help each other.
  48.  
  49.         In sysops we look for people who want to be actively involved
  50.         in the day-to-day operations of the network. U'NI-net
  51.         continues to evolve and there is a plethora of opportunities
  52.         available to help shape and determine the direction of this
  53.         network.

  56.         please read read files UNISYSOP.TXT in this archive.

  58. NETWORK GUIDELINES:
  59. ------------------

  61.         In an effort to maximize quality, minimize regulations and
  62.         provide you the best service possible we have "Guidelines"
  63.         which apply to all (sysops and users) and they are as
  64.         follows:
  65.  
  66.  
  67.         1)      The Network may only be used for legal purposes.  Even
  68.                 through the network is available world wide, Federal
  69.                 laws of the United States will be observed.
  70.  
  71.         2)      Abusive or offensive language (profanity and
  72.                 non-profanity included), name calling, personal
  73.                 attacks and other such forms of verbal combat
  74.                 will not be tolerated.
  75.  
  76.         3)      U'NI-net provides access to users of all ages from all
  77.                 over the world. In that all ages of users are welcome
  78.                 it is requested that discretion be used so "message
  79.                 text as well as subject matter" is suitable for
  80.                 viewing by users of all ages.
  81.  
  82.         4)      Aliases which are obvious are not permitted. Real
  83.                 sounding aliases are allowed if the local sysop
  84.                 approves. Dynamite Dan would not be allowed, where
  85.                 Dan Smith would be.
  86.  
  87. CONFERENCE GUIDELINES:
  88. ---------------------

  90.         In an effort to keep each conference on topic and minimize
  91.         user distraction, Conference Guidelines have been established
  92.         as follows:
  93.  
  94.         1) COLOR MESSAGES:
  95.            The posting of messages which contain ANSI or other color
  96.            code sequences is restricted to the ANSI-ART conference
  97.            ONLY.  In this case the term "message" includes the header,
  98.            body and any tagline(s) if used.
  99.  
  100.         2) FOR SALE or TRADE ITEMS:
  101.            The posting of messages offering one or more items for sale or
  102.            trade or for free are permitted only in the BUY-SELL and
  103.            WORLDMARKET conferences subject to the following exceptions;
  104.  
  105.            A) FIREARMS and MUNITIONS:
  106.               Firearms and/or munition offered for sale, trade or free
  107.               will be posted in the GUNS conference ONLY.
  108.  
  109.         3) ENCRYPTED MESSAGES: The posting of encrypted (scrambled)
  110.            messages is not allowed.  This includes encryption "keys"
  111.            as part of non-encrypted messages. Messages that contain
  112.            short binary executable files that have been converted to
  113.            text characters by programs such as UUENCODE so that they
  114.            may be transmitted as a message and posted in a conference
  115.            such as DOS-TIPS are not considered to be an encrypted
  116.            message.

  118.         The management team may approve a Conference Host' request for
  119.         exception to a conference guideline. Please contact the
  120.         Conference Host for complete details.
  121.  
  122. UNI-USERS CONFERENCE:
  123. -------------------
  124.  
  125.         This conference provides our users with a means of contacting
  126.         U'NI-net management directly should they care to offer a
  127.         suggestion or comment, or to report violations of Network
  128.         Guidelines. If you feel you have been the victim of a
  129.         guideline violation or you are experiencing a problem or
  130.         difficulty within a particular conference you are encouraged
  131.         to advise the Network Host by posting a message addressed to
  132.         Network Host CAM DEBUCK in the "UNI-USERS" conference. If
  133.         possible please provide a copy of the offending message
  134.         including all header and tagline information.

  137. USER INFORMATION:
  138. ----------------

  140.         EchoMail sent on U'NI-net is sorted by "Conference" with each
  141.         conference having an assigned topic and a "Conference Host"
  142.         whose duty is to welcome new users, keep the conference
  143.         messaging "on topic" and to provide assistance if or when
  144.         needed.
  145.  
  146.         Conference Hosts are solicited by the Conference Coordinator
  147.         who will in most cases post one or more public message(s) as
  148.         new conferences are formed, when vacancies occur or as the
  149.         need for a conference host (or co-host) arises.
  150.  
  151.         Conference Hosting is performed on a "voluntary" basis and any
  152.         user may apply to the Conference Coordinator for consideration.

  155. OTHER CONFERENCES:
  156. -----------------
  157.  
  158.         A list of available conferences with a brief description of
  159.         each conference can be found in file "conflist" in this
  160.         archive, or a more detailed description with the name of the
  161.         conference host and their access point is contained in file
  162.         UNICONF.DES within archive UNI###CD.ZIP. If you find a U'NI
  163.         conference whose topic is of interest to you but is not
  164.         available on the U'NI-net BBS you access, send a request to
  165.         your sysop to carry the conference.
  166.  
  167. MESSAGING:
  168. ---------
  169.  
  170.         The transmission of EchoMail generated on U'NI-net often
  171.         results in toll, long distance, and international telephone
  172.         charges. These charges are voluntarily paid by the U'NI-net
  173.         sysops as a service to our users. For this reason we request
  174.         of our users:
  175.  
  176.         1) Do not overquote previous message text, please limit quoting
  177.            to the minimum text necessary for the receiver to understand
  178.            or remember the subject under discussion.
  179.  
  180.          2) The size and length of signatures be kept to a minimum.
  181.  
  182. MANAGEMENT
  183. ----------
  184.  
  185.         Day to day decisions regarding normal operations of the
  186.         network are handles by Network Host Cam Debuck.  Major
  187.         decisions are decided by discussion and majority vote of the
  188.         U'NI-net Management Team.

  223.         existing Management Team.

  225.         Any member of the Team may initiate a discussion or propose a
  226.         vote. Sysops or Users who would like to see a change made in
  227.         the way the Network operates should contact a member of the
  228.         Management Team regarding a vote proposal.
